Da Vinci once said, “Knowledge comes from perception,” JPS Gallery recently explored the theme of perception, presenting the latest exhibition “Sense 6.” The exhibition showcases the works of 6 contemporary artists, Edu Carrillo, Natan Heber, Maxwell McMaster, Gab More, Paul Hunter Speagle, and Qin Tan, interpreting new works through visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, and the sixth sense (extrasensory).

The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle discussed vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch in his work “De Anima.” His followers still consider the five senses the most reliable way to reveal reality. However, modern science has shown that there are more types of senses than those described by Aristotle.

“Sense6” is not only the presentation of the five basic senses, but also brings out the sixth sense that Aristotle overlooked, extending the experience of the real world. Vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch are more practical abilities that allow us to explore the external world. In contrast, the sixth sense is a sensitive intuitive ability that receives information through channels beyond normal senses and can predict future events. “Sense6” brings us six contemporary artists who use extrasensory perception to perceive reality.

Edu Carrillo reflects the balance and separation between friendship and love with a magical touch, bringing out personal experiences and contemporary aesthetics with pure and direct sensitivity. In Gab More’s paintings, the subject is layered into geometric shapes, integrating fantasies and emotions from life, leaving an emotional mark on the soul.

Maxwell McMaster interprets dreamlike serene spaces with a profound perception, piecing together a new dimension with a consistent minimalist style. Natan Heber dissects the eternal childlike figure with multiple layers and images, exploring the origins and ambiguities of knowledge, bidding farewell to the stereotypical image of art.

Through a series of new paintings, Paul Hunter Speagle depicts the most controversial issues in today’s society from his own visual perspective. Finally, the artist Tan Qin takes on the role of “universal man,” combining virtual landscapes to create a world full of vitality and secular pleasures, showcasing the basic form of humanity.

Aristotle’s understanding of the senses may be somewhat wrong, as we experience reality and perceive the world through more than five senses. But what he is definitely right about is – “Seeking knowledge is human nature. This phenomenon allows us to derive pleasure from our senses.”
