Sometimes, after eating a lot of delicious food outside, it’s not as good as coming home to a meal prepared by your family. For artist Mei Ao Xue, tasting home-cooked food at home is more precious than a hundred delicacies. In her upcoming solo exhibition at the Artify Gallery, she will showcase a series of new works inspired by the authentic home-cooked dishes prepared by her mother and grandmother, under the theme of “Three dishes and one soup, with white rice served as you like”.
As early as last year, in the joint exhibition “Chinese Surrealism” at the Yi Shang Art Gallery in Aberdeen, Mei Aoxue brought oil paintings inspired by the rich imagery of tarot cards, filled with many whimsical images, symbols, numbers, and other elements, which have become her signature artistic style.
Although this exhibition focuses on food, the artist uses her humor and imagination to bring ingredients to life. She depicts various home-cooked dishes and ingredients on circular paper and fabric, such as spaghetti, hot pot, turnip cake, braised shiitake mushrooms, etc., creating a sense of a family dining table.
Mei Aoxue’s unique visual expression embodies her identity as a millennial artist, blending popular culture, cartoons, and other themes into her surrealistic artworks. She often draws inspiration from mythology, art history, drama, popular culture, and family, reflecting the artist’s personal experiences and evoking resonance in everyone’s daily life.
The exhibition will officially open this Saturday, September 10th. Everyone is welcome to come and experience this heartwarming “feast” of home.
