Double Q Gallery showcases a solo exhibition by Eastern European artist Djordje Ivačković, bringing together the artist’s abstract lyrical paintings since the 1980s!

Double Q Gallery recently presented a solo exhibition of the late Serbian artist Djordje Ivačković (1930 – 2012) titled “Djordje Ivačković: Crouching Harmony, Hidden Tension.” The exhibition featured eight paintings from the 1980s, a period when the artist’s painting entered a new stage of development characterized by stronger and more complex colors, brushstrokes, and compositions.

Looking back at American culture after World War II, jazz music was the main medium through which American influence spread to Eastern European societies. In the 1950s, the West Sea jazz music frequently played on the “Voice of America” radio station had a profound impact on Ivačković. At that time, he was a young musician who occasionally painted, and under the influence of music, Ivačković’s creations began to follow the gentle rhythm of the music. At the same time, he came into contact with the works of French lyrical abstract artists such as Schneider, Soulages, Mathieu, Zao Wou-Ki, as well as American abstract artists like De Kooning and Pollock, which continued to influence his artistic style.

The artist moved to Paris in the 1960s and participated in exhibitions organized by painters inspired by American music. The connection between jazz and his abstract paintings was most evident in the 1960s and became one of the most iconic elements in the following decades.

Until the 1970s and 1980s, his abstract and fluid style remained distinctive, but Ivačković began to focus more on the structure of his paintings and the concepts they conveyed. He argued that the ideas behind the work were more important than the materiality or even traditional aesthetics. This unique perspective on art gained recognition in the French art world and inspired future creators.

Feel free to visit the exhibition and enjoy Djordje Ivačković’s series of iconic classics.
