Everyone’s childhood memories are inseparable from various cartoons. For Korean artist Pacowhy, these animations not only accompanied him as he grew up but also became one of his biggest sources of inspiration. Lucie Chang Fine Arts recently announced the presentation of Pacowhy’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong – “PACOWHY 1982: Painting, Sketching, and Collage,” showcasing a series of whimsical graffiti works to the audience.

When it comes to street art, American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat definitely holds a place in this field. He depicts themes such as superheroes in a unique way, leaving a deep impression with bold and vibrant strokes. This style has influenced many later artists, including Pacowhy. Pacowhy’s works combine visual elements of painting, collage, and sketching, with the most eye-catching being the classic cartoon characters deeply rooted in people’s hearts, including Doraemon, Tigger, Popeye, Bugs Bunny, and more, resonating with many.

According to the artist’s childhood memories in Korea, every Sunday morning at 7 o’clock, Disney cartoons would be broadcasted. Even if he stayed up late the night before, he would insist on getting up on time to watch the show. This emotional connection to Disney continues to this day, as he visits different Disney parks around the world, where the music and atmosphere bring him joy. He also incorporates this as an important creative element, hoping to spread joy through his work.

This exhibition is also his first time showcasing the “Year of the Tiger 2022” series, with familiar yet different tiger characters that evoke a sense of warmth. It is worth mentioning that this series intentionally presents a worn and faded visual aesthetic, with a vintage feel that transports the audience back to the cartoon world of the eighties and nineties.
