Who says that only artists with formal art training can be successful? In fact, many famous painters we know of may not necessarily have come from an art background, but precisely because they are not bound by artistic rules, it allows them to create more freely, making it easier for them to create a unique and powerful personal style.
The recent “Diversity in Art” exhibition at HKUST showcases the outstanding works of 4 alumni, including Jeanie Leung, Claudia Sin, Vivian Ho, and Terence Pang, using different mediums.
The four artists participating in this exhibition have all experienced twists and turns before embarking on the path of art.
Hong Kong native Vivian, although she depicts only ordinary daily scenes of urban people, her boundless imagination and keen insight have added a touch of romance and surrealism to these ordinary aspects of life, even adding a cinematic quality. The surreal city under Vivian’s brush carries her fantasies, infatuation, and pride for this home.
Liang Yuanyuan (Jeanie) takes “The Flow of Life” as the theme, and her daughter even participated in the creation of two paintings to celebrate motherly love. Through her work, Jeanie promotes the message that “life is still beautiful even in difficult times,” with elements of love, growth, and reflection on life. Life takes twists and turns, and it wasn’t until 2009 that Jeanie became a full-time painter. Her classic character Oowa, created by her, not only captivates readers’ hearts but also brings her opportunities to exhibit in Hong Kong and Europe.
Claudia Sin (Claudia) originally painted portraits of cats and dogs for pet owners, but later expanded her subjects to include parrots and even tigers, with equally captivating results. A diligent learner, she taught herself pastel and oil painting. Even though she recently returned to work as a pilot, she still hopes to continue pursuing her artistic dreams and soar to new heights in her art career.
Pang Kwok-wai (Terence) presents a series of photos titled “My Image, My Existence,” documenting his personal life and important moments. The works are intentionally displayed in the form of Instagram, reminding us that even though the pandemic has disrupted travel plans, there are still many things waiting for us to explore. Now, let these photos take us on a journey through time.
Audiences can not only visit the campus to view the exhibition, but also appreciate this series of works online.
