Graduation exhibitions from various art departments of major universities are being held one after another, and we have seen many unique and personal creations. Contemporary By Angela Li gallery is about to hold an exhibition curated by Leung Siu-kei titled “Any Door,” featuring 8 young artists who have graduated in recent years, showcasing their imaginative and wonderful works.

The exhibiting artists include Chan King Long, Cheng Wing Tung, Chung Ka Ying, Hui Wan Yu, Leung Po Ying, Tse Man Hei, Wong Chun Ho, and Wong Kit Man. Through their unique artistic techniques, they express alternative perspectives on different things.

Everyone should be familiar with the “Dokodemo Door”, which is a famous treasure in the comic “Doraemon”. With it, you can easily reach any place you want. In the process of artistic creation, it is like opening a “Dokodemo Door”. Artists choose the medium that suits them, allowing countless thoughts to freely soar through creation. Every little thing can trigger inspiration, leading to the creation of their own ideal world. For newly graduated art students, embarking on the journey of creation is full of endless possibilities intertwining reality and fantasy.

Xie Wenxi’s paintings present a mysterious tension in the bizarre postures of the figures. “Underground Zero” features a man and a woman on a tan background, posing in the same manner, creating a paradoxical composition. The figures in the painting are plain and still, yet there exists a pulling relationship between them, forming a situation that is difficult to understand, also reflecting the artist’s feelings towards the current social situation.

Wang Zhenhao often presents his strange associations with things through ceramic works. He believes that humor is an important element in creation, and he is accustomed to reproducing ordinary things in a funny and playful way, forming a unique aesthetic to explore a bizarre world. The exhibited ceramic sculpture “Totem (Already Failed)” symbolizes stacking failures.

Wong Kit Man’s “Passers-by” series depicts the night scenes outside the bus as a record of the city. As a bystander sitting on the upper deck of the bus, shuttling back and forth through the city hundreds of times, the scenery outside the window is ever-changing, but the seemingly volatile urban situation has actually become clear. The artist reflects a sense of helplessness of passers-by through the flowing light and shadow in the artwork.

鍾嘉盈 then attempted to transform some personal thoughts and emotions into visual content by painting movie scenes, creating the Connecting the dots series with text. The artist creates an imaginary space for themselves during the painting process, a framework for reflection and self-talk, connecting the dots, clues, and experiences in daily life.

Hsu Yunyu’s works often combine elements of daily life and specific events, merging history and imagination to construct an isolated, unreal private space as a means of recording and emotional expression. The exhibited painting “Onlookers” explores the relationship between personal and collective emotions, permeated with a melancholic atmosphere.

《可唔可以俾我瞓個好覺》木板丙烯 25 x 38 x 6.5 cm 2022 鄭穎童

Zheng Yingtong’s “Turning Over This Page” series attempts to reshape the imagined family history. The artist carves some lost household items out of wood, then paints on the details, recreating a set of “old objects” that combine flat painting with three-dimensional modeling, and through realistically fake objects, relives the memories of the mind’s real and imaginary life.
