Cartoons are a childhood resonance for everyone. Do you know which animation accompanied you as you grew up? Recently, the exhibition space located on Tai Nan Street in Sham Shui Po, Tai Nan Tianti, brings the “Sailor Moon Animation Treasures Exhibition”, leading the audience to review classic animated works from the 70s and 80s, evoking everyone’s childhood stories.

The DVDs of old animated films may suffer from pixel distortion due to the passage of time, just as the new generation of young people are separated from the past culture by a thin layer of gauze. The original paintings of Sailor Moon are clear stills from old animations, like a roll of film ready to be developed at any time, through the strokes of the original artist and the passion of collectors, telling the memories of Hong Kong people in a vivid and detailed manner.

Old-fashioned animation was hand-drawn: first, sketching each frame, then coloring the characters with celluloid sheets. It takes hundreds of sheets to put together a short segment of animation, making the process of producing celluloid animation complex and lengthy. To become an artist capable of deciding on key line drawings, one may even need to spend more than ten years honing their skills.

After the millennium, the animation industry began to fully digitize, and Sailor Moon animation has been completely discontinued. In addition, early studios generally dispose of the original drawings that have been shown, so the original drawings that have been fortunate enough to be circulated outside have unique collectible significance.

The Grand South Sky Stairs is honored to invite Hong Kong’s original collector of Sally’s original paintings, Hong Hui Bookstore, to collaborate on an exhibition, selecting dozens of classic works that evoke memories for Hong Kong people, showcasing over a hundred different original paintings and animated posters of Sally. Hoping to revive the spirit and cultural charm of the past animation industry in the current fast-paced animation production line.

“The Prince of Sapphire” tells the story of exploring self-courage, “Finding Family in Ten Thousand Miles” expresses love and family, and “Old Master Q” alludes to the scenes of old Hong Kong social life. Despite the advantages of digital animation in terms of image quality, visual effects, and production speed, the concepts brought out by the Sally Animation are still closely linked to the growth process of Hong Kong people. To this day, “Doraemon” and “Ninja Boy Rantaro” are still being broadcast on television, and Sally Animation’s solid artistic style conveys a timeless sentiment.

Visitors are welcome to visit the exhibition and reminisce about the carefree time of childhood when they sat in front of the TV “carrying a small stool” and looked forward to watching cartoons.
