Hong Kong audiences may not be familiar with artist Kebeyo Chen, but her exquisite sculptural works have actually been featured in large shopping malls in Hong Kong in the past. Recently, Gallery Ascend invited Kebeyo to hold a solo exhibition “Circle of the Universe,” showcasing her unique and enchanting elf sculptures and works that will draw viewers into her colorful and surreal fantasy world!
The 20 works exhibited this time are a continuation of Kebeyo’s “Relationship” series created since 2019. Under her whimsical imagination, she creates quirky little elves composed of elements such as braids, pomegranate flowers, and seeds. The artist hopes to use the spreading braids of the characters as a medium to connect all things in this world.
The imagery of pomegranate flowers and seeds is repeatedly used in the works. For artists, these plants, like the long braids of characters, have infinite vitality. Although they may seem fragile individually, they imply a powerful force of growth, showcasing the splendid beauty of life. This symbol is also transformed by artists into adorable and charming little creatures, even transcending the flat canvas, attracting everyone to delve deeper into the meaning of life.
Kebeyo’s understanding of the philosophy of all things and endless inspiration have led her to create unique works of art. Her works combine both sensibility and sensitivity, with rich emotional and visual elements. Especially in this exhibition, her creations transcend the canvas and instead use a more vivid three-dimensional approach to stimulate the imagination, allowing viewers to explore the stories told by the works.
