Silk threads may seem ordinary, but who would have thought that under the skilled hands of an artist, a single thread could weave a myriad of images. KC100 Art Space recently presented the latest solo exhibition “Butterfly Tsunami” by Hong Kong line painting artist Alfred Cheng, where the artist transforms lines into a creative medium, weaving back and forth on the canvas to outline the graceful and magnificent beauty of butterflies and their splendid transformations.

The exhibition is themed around butterflies, with artists likening the brief and brilliant life of these creatures to the journey of life. Despite starting from ordinary beginnings, through the pursuit of transformation and efforts to break free from the cocoon, everyone has the right to bloom beautifully. Alfred also uses this to encourage those “butterflies” lost in the ocean, reminding them that every seemingly insignificant existence has the power to create a tsunami with a flap of its wings.

In the line drawing works, the butterflies are vividly portrayed, relying entirely on the artist’s patience and craftsmanship. When Alfred creates, he first nails the canvas evenly on the edge, then uses a thread to weave back and forth around the canvas, delicately controlling the density and direction of the thread, and then intertwining various vivid images.

Alfred used to focus on creating portrait line drawings. Last year, his first solo exhibition featured Hong Kong movie characters and emojis as materials. The works were centered on realism and reproduction, with the highly realistic facial works leaving a deep impression. This exhibition marks a major breakthrough for the artist. Alfred expressed his desire to incorporate more personal creative elements into his works, thus creating original images such as a dancing girl with butterfly wings and a child holding a lamp in the dark. Additionally, he also presented his first 3D work in this exhibition.

Artists are truly amazing in terms of their ideas, creative techniques, and skills. Want to know how a single line can transform into these stunning images? We recommend everyone to personally visit the exhibition!
