Bringing Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage to the international stage! Local creators reinterpret the traditional crafts of white iron, cheongsam, and paper art with contemporary art.

Last year, the Hong Kong Arts Centre collaborated with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Toronto to bring the local audience the “Fashion Mixology – Contemporary Cheongsam Exhibition”, which later took the works to Toronto and Vancouver in Canada, successfully promoting the cheongsam craftsmanship internationally.

To continue the promotion, both sides are presenting the contemporary intangible cultural heritage exhibition “Beyond Boundaries: Reshaping Hong Kong Everyday” in Toronto this year, allowing artists Chan Wai-tung, Sze Ming-kwan, and Yu Siu-nam to showcase the intersection of white iron, cheongsam, paper art, and contemporary art!

The well-known coffee culture, how can it add color to the entire coffee culture in Hong Kong under the traditional craftsmanship of Hong Kong’s white iron? In addition, although the traditional Chinese paper-mache lion heads are already well-known in Toronto’s Chinese community, how will artists explore female characteristics and other possibilities through this traditional “intangible cultural heritage” project traditionally dominated by men?

In addition, the exhibition will also showcase contemporary cheongsam designs, but unlike the previous exhibition, this time the cheongsam will be transformed into mini versions, with cheongsam decorations featuring unique Hong Kong cultural characteristics, allowing the audience to understand the story behind “Made in Hong Kong” from another perspective.

By exhibiting these works, the audience can see how traditional craftsmanship is transformed into innovative ideas, not only reproducing Hong Kong’s nostalgic daily life but also introducing more overseas audiences to Hong Kong’s local art.
