Art Basel is just around the corner, and international galleries are all set, bringing a variety of art pieces to the fair, waiting for the moment to shine! Pearl Lam Galleries announced their participation in this year’s exhibition, presenting works by 10 artists, including: Jana Benitez, Antony Micallef, Mr Doodle, Philip Colbert, Zhang Yibin, Marco Lu, Pang Yao, Su Xiaobo, Yang Danfeng, and Zhu Jinshi.
The gallery presents works by the renowned Chinese artist Marco Lu. As one of the founding members of the 1970s Chinese contemporary art group “Nameless Painting Society,” the artist has always been committed to the idea of ”art returning to its essence.” The two paintings on display are from Marco Lu’s recent “Ah Da” series, where the works reduce the so-called artistic language to a minimum to question the definition of a painting.
Chinese abstract artist Zhu Jinshi is known for his heavy-color, thickly painted “thick painting” style. His early abstract paintings were influenced by modernism, and his work “Sun” created in 1985 combines the characteristics of abstract expressionism and Chinese calligraphy. “Thirteen Tombs the Day Before Yesterday” is from the artist’s latest series, continuing the method of heavy-color, thick painting by directly applying undiluted acrylic paint to the canvas. The control of color, brushstrokes, layers, and direction presents a possibility of “anti-gravity.”
In terms of Western artists, the gallery will showcase the latest graffiti works by popular graffiti artist Mr Doodle. Inspired by Jackson Pollock’s paintings, Mr Doodle’s latest abstract graffiti series depicts more complex layers through spray paint and markers.
It is worth mentioning that the art gallery has officially become the representative of British artist Philip Colbert this year, and the gallery will introduce his iconic lobster character to the audience. Colbert’s work straddles contemporary popular culture and classic art history, spanning disciplines including painting, sculpture, furniture, design, and digital art, all featuring the lobster character.
