#FrenchMay2022: After working as a nanny for 40 years, she is actually a genius photographer! Vivian Maier’s personal portrait photography series reveals her mysterious side!

「鏡像真我」Vivian Maier

Becoming famous in the art world is not just about talent. Many creators who are now considered art giants were unknown during their lifetime, only to have their work appreciated after death. Known as the “most mysterious photographer,” Vivian Maier was a low-key talent before her passing. Recently, f22 foto space has brought a series of personal portrait photographs of this photographer, allowing everyone to get to know one of the most influential contemporary street photographers.

Maier was born in 1926 in New York, and spent most of her youth in France, where she began taking her first photos with a Kodak Brownie. Despite working as a full-time nanny in the United States for over 40 years, she continued to pursue her passion for photography. Maier always carried a camera in her spare time, capturing things like passersby, street scenes, and roadside objects that others might overlook. It is believed that the unique style of this photographer is attributed to her French background, showcasing a refined European style in her methods, subjects, and photographic style.

Maier’s one of the most striking self-portrait series, allowing more people to see the true face of this talented photographer. She occasionally takes selfies in front of mirrors and reflective glass, sometimes capturing impressions under the scorching sun, with a casual style, but each one showcases a unique minimalist composition style. The “self-portraits” exhibited this time allow the audience to catch a glimpse of her connection with space, Maier as a distant observer, revealing the beauty in everyday life that we overlook from a voyeuristic perspective.

Feel free to visit the exhibition and catch a glimpse of Vivian Maier’s mysterious soul through her personal portraits!
