View architecture as a living immersive multimedia art exhibition: “Thousand Layer Stomach”

“The Thousand Layer Stomach” is an exhibition that simulates the endless evolution and change of culture, much like the continuous division and reproduction of biological cells. Inspired by the Japanese post-war architectural movement “Metabolism,” the two artists behind Studio Swine, A.A. Murakami, view architecture as a living organism, allowing spaces to constantly grow and change over time. They connect technological advancements and environmental aesthetics through a system of metabolism, exploring the cultural, historical, and economic transformations of the postmodern world.

A.A. Murakami also examines the periodicity and metamorphic relationships between nature, architectural environments, the human body and ecology, technology, and geology. Their art creations, centered on research, span across disciplines such as architecture, sculpture, installation, and film. This immersive exhibition can be divided into several interconnected zones, revealing a vision of future anthropology, material culture, and regeneration processes in the post-technological era.

The beautiful scenery of Hong Kong under the brush of the ink master: “Lü Shoukun: Hong Kong Landscape”

Yi Shang Gallery presents a solo exhibition of ink master Lui Shou-kwan’s “Hong Kong Scenery”, showcasing Lui’s contemporary landscape masterpieces created in the 1950s and 1960s, depicting the beautiful scenery he encountered in various locations in Hong Kong. This includes famous landmarks such as Victoria Harbour, The Peak, Lion Rock, Happy Valley, as well as picturesque locations like Repulse Bay, Shek O, and the secluded valleys and steep peaks of the suburbs. Through these works, we can trace Lui’s exquisite depiction of seasons, weather, and the different changes of day and night with extraordinary painting techniques, as well as the spirit of literati in inheriting and promoting traditional ink painting.

Lui Shoukun is hailed as a pioneer of the “New Ink Movement” in Hong Kong. He advocates for the innovation of traditional ink painting, but has never abandoned traditional ink. In Lui’s artistic life, traditional Chinese painting, Hong Kong scenery, and abstract ink painting are carried out simultaneously. He is also deeply inspired by Western artists such as William Turner. He combines these Western styles with traditional Chinese painting techniques, pioneering a unique artistic approach that is both back to basics and forward-looking, exerting a profound influence on the development of contemporary Chinese art.

“Lu Shoukun: Hong Kong Landscape”

4. Contemporary renowned figurative artist Shannon Cartier Lucy’s first exhibition in Asia: “A STAPLED GLASS”

MDC Gallery presents the first solo exhibition of American artist Shannon Cartier Lucy in Hong Kong, titled “A STAPLED GLASS”. Lucy is one of the renowned figurative painters today, with over 20 years of artistic practice. Her paintings use simple preludes to convey vast narratives: seemingly insignificant images extend into infinite imagination. Her works often depict everyday life but with a sense of strangeness: a woman stretching; a girl with hands tied by a red string; a finger pointing to a dark void; a cracked glass. Her pieces are both ordinary and absurd, comfortable and uncomfortable, satirical and unsettling.

This exhibition is the first solo exhibition that the artist has collaborated with MDC Gallery, and it is also her first exhibition in Asia. The exhibition consists of seven new paintings from 2021, echoing the aesthetic language of the 17th-century Baroque masters in light and shadow.

“A STAPLED GLASS”
Date: From now until March 12
Time: 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM
Location: MDC Gallery, 301-302 Pedder Building, 12 Pedder Street, Central, Hong Kong

Young artists from around the world explore unique spaces: “Global Song” group exhibition

The artists in this exhibition come from different countries around the world, reflecting the present from different perspectives, capturing the new reality through figurative painting. Their paintings are like being placed in a contemporary unconscious dream, attempting to reveal and overcome the complexity within themselves through the interpretation of dreams and the unconscious. In this state of consciousness detachment, an alien space is explored, revealing the diversity of consciousness and revelatory experiences. The strangeness and unreal emotions of these scenes mix the characteristics of surrealism with idealized figures and scenes from another world. At the same time, they also respond to the relationship between individuals and the surrounding world, juxtaposing perception and memory to engage in moments of self-identity.

Through the works of young artists from around the world, we vaguely witness the global song dotted with stars. Reality and de-territorialization are juxtaposed, forming a blurry zone of fluidity and transition. Songs serve as a kind of ideology, permeating various styles and art historical time and space, resonating into a new century psychedelic song. We might as well feel it visually from these young artists.

“Global Song” Group Exhibition
Date: From now until February 12 (Closed on Sundays and Mondays)
Time: 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Location: Tang Contemporary Art Center, 10/F, 80 Queen’s Road Central, Central
