What do artists “collaborate” on? Breaking boundaries and showcasing cross-disciplinary creations from directors to chefs, artists to poets!

When it comes to “setting up a table” in daily life, it must be in a restaurant, but did you know that art creation can also involve setting up a table? “Jockey Club New Arts Power” will present the finale program “Setting Up a Table” in January, where the planning team breaks through imagination, viewing the “table” as a focal point for knowledge exchange, a vessel for conveying ideas, and even a stage for “dialogue.” They have invited 8 creators from different fields to collaborate and showcase cross-disciplinary creative exchange content.

These creators have different identities, including directors, actors, chefs, ikebana artists, etc. What kind of sparks can their collaboration create?

1. Director and chef cook together: Wong Chun Tat × Wong Lai Yan

The term “Duck and Cover” originated from the civil defense instructional videos produced by the US government during the Cold War in the 1950s, teaching people to always be prepared to respond to a nuclear bomb attack.

In addition to shelter, food is also a top priority during a disaster. At the beginning of an epidemic, facing the possibility of isolation at any time, how many people have a strict food storage plan?

Theater director Wong Chun Tat and chef and visual artist Wong Lai Yan will demonstrate the preparation of a dish called “Duck and Cover” under the theme of disaster preparedness; they will also introduce various emergency foods, providing the audience with different options when faced with disasters.

Synchronized Swimmer and Playwright Mastering the “Flow” of Time: Huang Shiyi x Pan Shiyun

Synchronized swimmer Huang Shiyi and playwright and theater creator Pan Shiyun both focus on how to master the “flow” of time: how to show rhythm and power in the water? How to show tension in the plot? The performance venues they belong to – the swimming pool and the theater, seem to be worlds apart, but the performances equally emphasize rhythm, power, structure, and various arrangements.

The two creators, Huang Shiyi and Pan Shiyun, will re-examine past experiences together, finding their convergence point in the intangible flow of time and space; using images, words, dialogue, and demonstrations, they will coalesce internally and externally with the audience, refining themselves.

Observing Human Emotions in Stage and Floral Arrangements: Lin Peilian × Leung Wai Yee

The ikebana master arranges branches and leaves in the flower vessel, while the actors explore in the theater. Flowers and theater have deep roots in Japanese culture. When the theater actors reflect themselves through ikebana and encounter an ikebana master who uses flower vessels as a stage, how will they combine these two completely different art forms into one?

Actress Lin Peilian and ikebana artist Liang Weiyi are both deeply influenced by Japanese culture. The two of them have diligently trained their skills, cultivated their minds, and observed human emotions and contemplated worldly principles through the stage and flower arrangements. The discussion segment will share the various insights of these two artists in the blooming and withering of flowers, as well as behind the scenes of the stage.

Emotions, a familiar yet unfamiliar companion; for artists, it profoundly influences their artistic aesthetics and life. Sound artist Zhao Langtian and poet Huang Yubang, after months of collection and organization, transform everyday objects into carriers of emotions. Each emotion is presented metaphorically or personified, attempting to broaden the public’s understanding and imagination of various emotions.

During the performance, the artist will gradually unveil objects in front of the audience, explaining how to use sound, music, and text to record and “process” emotions.
