The end of the “Le Mans Legend”? Ford confirms that the Ford GT supercar will officially cease production at the end of the year.

The story of the Ford GT, do fans still remember the day when Ford automotive designer Don Frey proposed to Enzo Ferrari for acquisition, only to be rejected at the last moment and create this legend? Today, 60 years later, the story is finally coming to an end.

Recently, Ford announced that this groundbreaking tank will officially cease production. This track-chewing supercar, nurtured by racing, is the product of decades of heritage on the international endurance racing stage. Just like the original GT40, Ford created this generation of Ford GT with the goal of winning the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race, a goal it spectacularly achieved on its first attempt. The final 250 cars of this modern racing legend mark the end of an era in the manufacturer’s history that will continue to exist.

2016 marks the 50th anniversary of Ford’s groundbreaking victory at the 1966 Le Mans 24-hour endurance race with the iconic GT40. This impressive feat was the result of years of intense work to create a car that could beat Ferrari. Ferrari was a legend at Le Mans, winning more than 24 hours in the 1950s and 1960s. After Ford’s failed attempt to acquire Ferrari, Ford Motor redirected its efforts and extra funding into a race aimed at humiliating Ferrari on the world stage. With the help of legendary figures like Carroll Shelby, Ken Miles, Bruce McLaren, and Mario Andretti, Ford defeated Ferrari, solidifying its status as a Le Mans legend – a result that fans of “Ford vs Ferrari” should be familiar with.

However, this bad news may be the harbinger of good news. Ford has indicated that Multimatic, the company manufacturing the Ford GT, is expected to complete production of all 1,350 units by December 2022. However, labeling the production cycle of the Ford GT as “second generation” nearing its end may mean that fans will have to wait to welcome the factory’s readiness for a potential third generation Ford GT.
