The largest retrospective exhibition of “Polka Dot Queen” in Spain in the past 10 years! M+ Yayoi Kusama Exhibition, landing at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

The “Yayoi Kusama: From 1945 to Present” special exhibition held at M+ earlier was the most comprehensive retrospective of Yayoi Kusama to date. Not only was it highly acclaimed, but it also received over 280,000 visitors from both local and global locations during its exhibition period from November 12th of last year to May 14th of this year. Recently, it was announced that the exhibition will be relocated to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, and will be on display from June 27th, 2023 to October 8th, 2023.

The exhibition “Yayoi Kusama: From 1945 to Present” at the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum is curated by M+ Deputy Director and Chief Curator Doryun Chong, independent curator Miho Yoshitake, and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao curator Lucía Agirre. The exhibition features 200 works, including paintings, sculptures, moving images, installations, and archival materials, that were previously exhibited at M+ and have now been transported to Spain. M+’s “Yayoi Kusama: From 1945 to Present” is the most comprehensive retrospective of Yayoi Kusama to date, and the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum’s exhibition becomes the largest retrospective of Yayoi Kusama in Spain in the past decade.

The exhibition is organized chronologically and thematically, showcasing Yayoi Kusama’s works from her earliest to most recent creations. It examines her artistic development in Japan, the United States, and Europe, and maintains the six themes used in the Hong Kong exhibition: Infinity, Accumulation, Comprehensive Connection, Biological Universe, Death, and the Power of Life.
